RS-232 Control "Input"?

Post RS-232 Control "Input"?
It doesn't sound like the serial port can be used for "control", just for outputting messages. I'd love a way to interface to this solely by RS-232, so I can forget about IR (hardwired or not) all together. Plus, 2-way serial could even allow for status feedback as far as PS3 power on state, etc. You would have to come up with your own command set for each button.

Seems that it would be possible to add this via a firmware upgrade. Any thoughts? Would make it even more appealing to the PRO installers that use Crestron, AMX, or RTI (like I do).

Thanks,
Dino

Hi, Dino. Correct, the RS232 is for outputting messages. Input might be possible and we could look into it if there's enough interest. I can see RS232 commands for simple button presses (e.g. On, Off, Play, Stop, etc), but how about press-and-hold duration commands (e.g. FastForward)?

Press and hold commands work the same way, the controller just sends the same message out back to back as long as the button is held down. I agree, this adds a little to the complexity, but my A/V receiver from Onkyo works just fine with RS-232 for ramping volume control, etc. So it "could" work in a similar manner on the IR2BT for fast forward. Again, from a custom installer point of view, this could add a lot of value.

I'd be interested in seeing RS232 input integrated in, We use Control 4 and Vantage controls and RTI as far as
integrating into our home automation systems. Status feedback is key for my company.

I would also like to see 2-way RS232 implemented.

Just received my IR2BTci and will make some tests in the coming days but at first glance, I would also support the idea of having 2-way RS232.
I'm using mainly AMX as control systems and this would simplify wiring (using only RS232).
Plus having feedback like the power sensing status would be great.

Thanks,
Eric

I would also love some 2way rs232 for my automation system as it makes for much simpler logic using my HDMI matrix across 4 rooms and screens to know when the Ps3 is on or off.

Thanks

Lee

Hello,

I'd like to know if yher's any news regarding RS 232 control.
On RemoteCentral. com, SimonO stated the 23 May 2009 that he was working with Bruce to find out a 2-way control system
Here's the link :
http://www.remotecentral.com/cgi-bin/mboard/ps3/thread.cgi?5

How far is the situation now ?

Best regards,

Christophe

I've been using a beta version of the RS232 firmware for about a year now, and it's been working great with my RTI control system. I'm surprised Bruce never took this to the next level by releasing a supported version of this. Seems like there is a lot of interest.
